This is the eighth consecutive year that cigarette taxes have been raised, but this increase is the largest during this period. In the past seven years, the tax on cigarettes per pack of 20 cigarettes has been increased by 50 Euro cents each time. The budget will raise taxes on cigarettes by 75 cents, raising the price of the most popular price pack to 16.75 euros. Other tobacco products will also increase proportionally.
Irish Finance Minister Michael McGrath confirmed the price increase, but he also revealed that the price of alcohol products would not change. Mcgrath said at the congress that the total budget for 2024 would be 14 billion euros.
The Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) is also calling for an increase in cigarette tax of €2.10 per year for the next two years, in the hope that the price of a pack of cigarettes will increase to €20 by 2025, in order to reduce smoking among young people.
McGrath also announced that the 2025 budget will introduce a domestic tax on e-cigarette products.
Previously, the Irish charity's budget proposal for 2024 also included raising the price of e-liquid, but would not unduly penalize people who use e-cigarettes as a method of quitting smoking. Tax increase of 10 euro cents per milliliter of e-liquid. This means that the price of disposable e-cigarettes will typically increase by 25%, or €2 per e-cigarette.
But Mr McGrath told the House of Representatives at the time of the budget announcement that there had been "a lot of preparation work by my department and the tax department in drafting this legislation".
